REALTORS: YOUR BROKER DOESN’T WORK FOR YOU—YOU WORK FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Your Broker Provides the Platform, Support and Opportunity. They Aren’t Your Personal Lead-Generation Department, Marketing Assistant or Babysitter.

SOME REALTORS HAVE THIS WHOLE THING BACKWARDS

You got your real estate license.

You joined a brokerage.

And somewhere along the way, you started believing your broker was supposed to build your career for you.

Where are my leads?

Where is my marketing?

Why isn’t anybody calling me?

Why isn’t the brokerage promoting me?

Why isn’t my broker motivating me?

Why isn’t somebody helping me get listings?

WAIT A DAMN MINUTE.

Whose business is this?

Because Realtors love calling themselves entrepreneurs and independent business owners until it’s time to actually operate like one.

YOUR BROKERAGE IS THE PLATFORM—NOT THE BUSINESS

A good brokerage should give agents a strong environment to succeed.

Leadership.

Training.

Technology.

Compliance.

Broker support.

Systems.

Marketing resources.

A professional place to conduct business.

But those things are tools.

You still have to pick them up.

Your brokerage can give you a CRM.

It can’t make you call the people in it.

Your brokerage can provide training.

It can’t make you attend.

Your broker can teach you how to get listings.

They can’t knock on the homeowner’s door for you.

At some point, you have to do the damn work.

YOUR BROKER IS NOT YOUR PERSONAL LEAD-GENERATION DEPARTMENT

This entitlement drives me crazy.

An agent joins a brokerage and immediately asks:

“How many leads am I getting?”

How about this question:

HOW MANY LEADS ARE YOU CREATING?

Call your database.

Call your past clients.

Meet people.

Attend events.

Prospect neighborhoods.

Follow up with old leads.

Build relationships.

Create content.

Ask for referrals.

Go find some damn business.

If your entire career depends on your broker dropping leads into your lap every morning, you haven’t built a real estate business.

You’ve built a dependency.

YOU WANT THE FREEDOM? ACCEPT THE RESPONSIBILITY.

One of the greatest things about real estate is freedom.

Nobody tells most Realtors when to wake up.

Nobody tells you when to go to lunch.

Nobody tells you how many phone calls you have to make today.

Nobody guarantees your paycheck either.

That’s the deal.

YOU DON’T GET ENTREPRENEUR FREEDOM WITH EMPLOYEE EXPECTATIONS.

If you want unlimited income potential, you also accept unlimited responsibility for creating that income.

You can’t demand independence when things are going well and suddenly become an employee when business gets slow.

YOUR BROKER SHOULD NOT CARE MORE ABOUT YOUR CAREER THAN YOU DO

If your broker is constantly calling you saying:

Did you follow up?

Did you call your database?

Are you coming to training?

Have you updated your CRM?

Where have you been?

Then something is backwards.

Your broker should coach you.

Guide you.

Answer questions.

Help you through difficult transactions.

Push you when necessary.

But your broker shouldn’t have to drag you toward your own success.

YOU’RE AN ADULT RUNNING A BUSINESS. ACT LIKE IT.

A GREAT BROKERAGE CAN’T FIX A REALTOR WHO WON’T WORK

Put a hardworking Realtor inside a brokerage with good leadership, technology and support and you can create something powerful.

Put a lazy Realtor in the exact same environment?

Nothing happens.

Same office.

Same technology.

Same training.

Same broker.

Different outcome.

Why?

BECAUSE THE AGENT STILL MATTERS.

The brokerage can create the environment.

The Realtor has to create the production.

FINAL THOUGHT

Realtors, stop asking:

“What is my brokerage going to do for me?”

Start asking:

“WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH EVERYTHING MY BROKERAGE HAS ALREADY GIVEN ME?”

Use the technology.

Attend the training.

Call your database.

Build your brand.

Learn your market.

Follow up.

Prospect.

Ask for the appointment.

Ask for the listing.

Go earn the commission.

Your broker should absolutely support you.

But your broker isn’t responsible for making you successful.

YOUR BROKER SHOULD HELP YOU BUILD YOUR BUSINESS.

YOUR BROKER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BUILD YOUR BUSINESS FOR YOU.
